The purpose of this study in to investigate college students' perception on characteristics of voluntary work and level of willingness of participating in voluntary work. Four-hundred and ten sophomores, 254 males and 156 females, from Taiwan University, University of Chinese Culture, Chiao Tung University and Tunghai University were participated as subjects in the study. The questionnaire, developed by the researcher, was used as instrument to collect data and statistical procedure were applied to analyze data. The validity and relibility of the instrument were highly satisfactory. The results of the study indicates: 1. College students have positive attitude toward voluntary work. They peceive volunteer as a person who is kind, optimistic, fair, altruistic and love of learning. 2.Most of the subjects are not taken part in voluntary work and merely half of the subjects show willingness in participating voluntary work. 3.Correlation between perception on characteristics of voluntary work and willingness of participating in voluntary work of students are also found in the study. According to the results of the results of the study, it is recommended that the college develops voluntary program to offer opportunity to students to serve the community, to offer course of voluntary work on general educational program and replace public service for punishment when students have misconducts.
