本文以一個臺灣聚落一百年來發展的過程為例，結合文獻與田野工作來探討想像「故鄉」不同的方式。本文論證政治經濟體系的空間分配、聘僱方式與文化空間概念為形塑移民如何想像「故鄉」的基礎。因此，移民與故鄉之間之血緣與地緣的聯結以及其中蘊含的道德性只是眾多的想像方式之一。其次，本文也著重在討論移民如何透過建築與地方的重構，將其現世短暫的經濟成就轉換為持久的文化價值。在這過程中，移民不斷透過各樣新型建築形式的引入與創造來具現其新的認同。本文最後討論新一代的移民與故鄉聯結的方式。在全球資本主義影響下，血緣與地緣的重要性逐漸被削弱。在受到外來知識的影響與建構後，故鄉做為「藏寶庫」的意象被突顯出來，並與傳統的想像方式相互競爭。

In this paper, I draw on a specific ethnographic case from Taiwan to discuss how“moral excellence”of a native place, connoting intensive kinship ties and territorial attachment, has formed out of the different spatial distributions of political economy, employment patterns, and cultural ideas of place. Second, I show how, by rebuilding ancestral houses, tombs, and executing community construction projects, the migrants convert their material success into longlasting cultural value, the new architecture also being designed so as to objectify their new identities. Finally, I argue that when the migrants engage with the new era of global capitalism, in which kinship and territorial ties are significantly deemphasized, it changes their interactions with the people in their place of origin. Their imagination of homeland is thus elaborated by knowledge gained from the outside world, and is replaced by an image of a“treasure trove”, which contests with the traditional views of homeland.
