Black humor seems to be an exclusive hallmark of American postmodernist fiction.However,it happens to be typical of Carver,a neo-realist,too.The paper attempts firstly to contextualize the thematic and stylistic common ground for modernist,postmodernist,and neo-realist fiction,so as to focus on the black humor in Carver,where his innovation,modernist and postmodernist legacies converge.
