In Joyce’s novels, food persists as a significant image. Joyce’s food writing not only reflects the living conditions and dietary cultures of the Irish in the early 20 th century, but also serves as an important way for the individuals and the race to recognize and express themselves. In Joyce’s era, the diet of the Irish was largely molded by colonialism, behind which lie profound historical implications and political connotations. Through Bloom’s existential choice between meat-eating and vegetarianism, Joyce manifests the ethical nature and moral values of food, and explores the possibility of establishing a new cultural identity. Food is also a noteworthy image in explaining Joyce’s theory of cycles and philosophy of becoming, closely relating to individual and ethnic reproductions. This paper discusses the importance of food as a special political, ethical and philosophical narrative in Joyce’s novels and investigates its semiological significance.
