This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed method design to investigate the dimensions of leisure motivation, leisure constraints, and cross-cultural adaptation. The core category of leisure motivation comprises six dimensions, including exploration and curiosity needs, biological needs, intellectual needs, social needs, psychological needs, and acculturation needs. Leisure constraints were identified with five dimensions, including language barriers, time constraints, cultural barriers, work-related constraints, and psychological constraints. Cross-cultural adaptation consists of five dimensions, including cultural, emotional, social, daily life practice, and work adaptation. The study used the constraint-effects-mitigation (CEM) theory as the theoretical background to examine the relationship between these constructs and leisure participation intention. Results showed that leisure motivation, leisure constraints, and cross-cultural adaptation significantly predicted leisure participation intention, supporting the formulated hypotheses. The exploratory sequential mixed methods design comprehensively understood the factors influencing leisure participation intention. In contrast, the CEM theory provided a framework for analysis. Findings have practical implications for designing interventions and programs to promote leisure engagement in similar contexts. Further research is recommended to explore additional variables and expand the understanding of leisure participation intention in diverse populations.
