「新清史」一詞，乃是近幾年始出現的名稱，其反映晚近有關清代時期學術研究上的革新性趨勢。此名詞雖首見於美國，但在日本或其他地方較新的研究論著中已廣泛被採用。此一學術研究的主要特性，乃在於意圖洞察清朝統治的諸多要素，尤其是著重於儘管它是一個中國的王朝，但卻是由滿族所建立並領導的部分。 在這個逐漸形成的學術研究架構裏，史學家開始就中國歷史以及當代中國民族組成中滿族統治的意義上提出新議題。一般而言，新清史以挑戰漢族中心論述；經由新的範式探索過去（例如殖民主義）；並且由邊陲角度來審視歷史事件為其目標。簡言之，此一學術課題揭示非漢族的觀點，並把它整合於我們的歷史認知中。但是新清史並非僅僅是知識上的變化，它同時也呈現在語言上，在這方面最主要標誌在於研究方法上採用了漢語以外的其他語言記載之文獻。目前，滿語文獻是其中最重要的材料。在本論文中，我將扼要地簡述滿族檔案在新清史的發展過程中已經展現且於未來仍將持續扮演的角色。
"New Ch'ing History," a term that has appeared within the last few yeas, refers to an innovative trend in recent scholarship on the Ch'ing period. The term arose first in the United States, but applies to newer work appearing in Japan and elsewhere, too. The main characteristic of this scholarship is its analysis of those elements of the Ch'ing order specifically related to the fact that, while a Chinese dynasty, the Ch'ing was a state founded and led by Manchus. Generally, speaking, the thrust of the New Ch'ing History is to challenge Sinocentric narratives, to explore the past using alternative paradigms (e.g., colonialism), and to examine events from the periphery. In other words, it is an intellectual project that actively seeks to discover the viewpoint of the non-Han Other and integrate in into our historical understanding. But the New Ch'ing History is more than just an epistemological turn. It represents a linguistic turn as well, in that its primary methodological hallmark is the use of written sources in languages other than Chinese. So far, materials in the Manchu language constitute the most important such resource. This paper outlines the part that Manchu archives have played and will continue to play in the development of the New Ch'ing History.
