本研究旨在探討英譯中漫畫譯皷可能遇到之挑戰,並從中國郵報80則漫畫中,整理出常犯之翻譯錯誤類型,進而提議一些補救策略。目前,初步調查發現之錯誤類型包括:字對字之直譯、內插文字及非文字訊息之漏譯、擬聲字之不當翻譯與翻譯版面之錯置。此翻譯錯誤之潛在原因可歸類成語言及非語言要素。前者包括幽默雙關語之不可譯性;後者包括譯者欠缺譯入語之社會、文化及歷史背景及排版技術問題。為解決此問題,譯者可斟酌使用一些補救策略,如:避免直譯、加入內插文字或非文字訊息之譯文、充擬聲字之解釋及彈性排版。上述所列舉之翻譯錯誤類型及建議之補救策略,並非周全詳盡;僅供翻譯教師參考,並為未來英中漫畫翻譯之相關研究提供拋磚引玉之作用。
This study is aimed at investigating the common errors in comics translation and then raises certain remedial strategies to improve its translation quality. A total of 80 translation samples of comics from The China Post was surveyed and certain common errors were detected, including literal, word-for-word translation, misinterpretation of contextual messages, missing translation of inserted verbal messages and nonverbal messages, inadequate translation of onomatopoeic words and misplaced translations. The hidden reasons for such errors include linguistic factors such as uneasy-to-translate puns, lack of socio-cultural background and non-linguistic factors such as technical problems. To cope with such problems, we propose avoiding message misinterpretation and literal translation, adding the translations of inserted verbal and nonverbal messages, providing the translations of integrated verbal messages, supplementing explanations for onomatopoeic words and prudent, flexible typesetting. The detected errors and proposed remedial strategies, though not exhaustive, have provided translation instructors with a direction for diagnosis in existing comics translation and could serve as guidelines for future teaching using comics translation as the practical subject.
