Every era has its own viewpoint and perspective on things. This is what the science historian Thomas Kuhn called a “paradigm”, a way to see and ascertain the world. Through a breezy and sincere storytelling, this article, “Seeing Taipei MRT from History: A Story about Creation and Collaboration”, wishes to synthesize past historical images and lead readers back along the MRT history trail to reflect upon the past MRT construction sequences and stories, enabling both the images of Taipei MRT construction and the imagined beautiful future to be noticed and seen. This article is divided into four sections: 1. The very beginning of MRT construction (1975~1986) ― the long brewing and gestation period, 2. Initiation and foundation laying (6/1986 ~1992) ─ construction of six Taipei MRT routes, 3. Efforts and harvest (6/1992 ~ 12/2000) 4. The second construction peak and second-wave development. By reflecting on and synthesizing Taipei MRT construction stories, this article wishes to provide readers with a perspective in understanding certain key turning points of the construction of Taipei MRT and the current image of construction status. Some of the stories and their contexts might affect staff members’ feelings. However, with the staff members’ high-spirited enthusiasm, joyfulness, and diligence in constructing Taipei MRT, in this moment of second construction peak and second-wave development, we engage ourselves in providing the general public with the promised top notch Taipei MRT. It is believed that we will overcome the difficulties, gradually creating a new MRT for all cities.
