A dictionary is usually regarded as a standard grammar; however, generally the Taiwan Southern Min lexicography is not considered to be user-friendly due to inconsistent characters and sound variants in Taiwan Southern Min. Although the Dictionary of the Most Frequently Used Words of the Min'nan Language, edited by the Ministry of Education, had finally been confirmed in 2005, we still find some mismatches between characters and pronunciations. Hence, this study aims to correct these mistakes according to several procedures, such as using the database management system Visual FoxPro to primarily investigate the dictionary content and to do hand-checking correction. Then, we built up the character and pronunciation mapping system of Taiwan Southern Min by organizing all possible combinations with Excel. Meanwhile, we revised the invalid mappings, and put the sound variants into their corresponding character sets. Finally, all sets containing characters and pronunciations were examined and checked artificially. With the help of the computer software, the rate of speed and accuracy is improved. All in all, we would like to share our experiences in revising dictionary system for your reference.
