English-language newspapers play one of the important roles in college ESL courses as teaching materials because they can provide up-to-date information, various data, and contemporary English. Students, however, should know the characteristics of newspaper English before newspapers are used as teaching materials. Otherwise, students may be confused by the grammatical structures and writing style, which are quite different from those of everyday writing, even feel frustrated and give up. This paper analyzes the characteristics of newspaper English(headline, lead, sentences, grammatical structure, and new words) by using the texts of the four most popular English-language newspapers in Taiwan: the China Post, the Taiwan News(China News), the Herald Tribune and USA Today. Such analysis, I believe, will lessen students' apprehension, arouse their interest, enhance their comprehension of the special writing style used in English newspapers, and even make them treat English newspapers as effective learning tools. The purpose of this paper is also to prove that English-language newspapers are effective teaching tools for different levels of students by examining their characteristics. By analyzing some important parts of the grammatical structures used in English newspapers, different levels of students can review them, study contemporary English, improve their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, even rebuild their self-confidence in learning English, and become life-long learners.
