The Freedom Writers Diary is a compilation of selected diary entries written by Erin Gruwell and her students. The entries contain Gruwell’s teaching philosophy and her students’ progress over the past four years. By having her students read books and write diaries, Gruwell guides students to facing existing reality, furthermore, changing their views of life and ultimately advancing to salvation. The resulting outcome should engender an enlightening experience for those who look further into this phenomenon. This research examines the purpose and effectiveness of reading and writing through the discussion of The Freedom Writers Diary. It begins with the background setting of this book, followed by “confessions of freedomwriters” and “changes in freedomwriters”. Through the comparison of these two topics, the relationship between written words and mind growth is examined.
