The Orphan of Zhao deserves attention because of the part it has played in the literature of the East and the West. The Yuan play which has revenge and retribution as its central theme, was the first Chinese play to be rendered into any European language and the only Chinese play that has left an imprint in Western drama. When the Yuan play was first introduced to Europe in the incomplete translation by father Joseph Henri Prémare (1666-1736), a French Jesuit missionary in 1735 (in ]. The Orphan of Zhao was well-received throughout Europe with the vogue of chinoiserie at its height. Between 1752 and 1759, the play was adapted into Italian (Metastasio) , French (Voltaire) and English (Murphy). In Vienna, the Italian playwright Pietro Metastasio had received a request from Empress Maria Theresa to write a drama for a court performance. Thus, in 1752, he produced L'Eroe cinese. For the play, he had taken inspiration of The Orphan of Zhao and specifically mentions the story in Du Halde's book. However, as Metastasio was restricted by the number of actors (namely five) and duration, his play had a rather simple plot. In 1755, Voltaire wrote his L'Orphelin de la Chine. About his adapted play, Voltaire's thesis was that of a story exemplifying morality, that is as he explained, that genius and reason has a natural superiority over blind force and barbarism. In 1759, the Irish playwright Arthur Murphy wrote his Orphan of China. He stated that he had been attracted by Prémare's play, but his play even more resembles Voltaire's L'Orphelin de la Chine. Murphy's Orphan of China was first performed in April 1759 and became highly successful in England. Within ten years, playwrights of three countries had adapted the Yuan play to their own needs. Metastasio interpreted his image of China with rigid structure of opera seria. Voltaire found the ideal of absolutism governed by virtue and reason in ancient China even if he had to idealize Genghis Khan in the process. Murphy found that the divine right of kings and virtue can coexist in a fictitious China ruled by the tyrant Genghis Khan. This thesis, thus, tries to analyze the translation of Prémare, and the mentioned three importante adaptations during the eighteenth century with Antoine Berman’s view of translation criticism as well as the theory of adaptation of Linda Hutcheon. The ways of The Orphan of Zhao’s translation and adaptation suggest that the life and reincarnation of a subject matter or literary motif is determined by the ideological or psychological need of a specific time and place.
