Death is an unavoidable fate of mankind. One can observe the phenomenon of death but never understand its reality. Only with an adequate interpretation of death can human face up to death. The purpose of the study is intended to explore the idea of afterlife of ancient Chinese, before Buddhism was introduced into China. Chinese has shown the respectful and fearful to the deceased since the ancient time. We can see the ambivalence between keeping in touch, and breaking it off with the issue of death from the ancient funeral rituals. The world after death is constructed by the imagination of the living person, the deceased will follow the guide from rituals and the specification of space, to reach where they belong. The study include four topics, which are the imagination about ghost, the funerary objects give expression of faith, the classical texts and the temples and tombs of afterlife.
