In Taiwanese literature rhyming is a very prominent feature and in order to describe its rhyming a rhyme category system is used. There exist rhyme systems of traditional Hokkien and Taiwanese rhyme books and even new ones developed by Chinese and Taiwanese scholars, one of them being 22-Rhymes. This research analyzes its applicability in Taiwanese literature current rhyming in order to stimulate the search for and the critical thinking about developing a practical rhyme system or even support 22-Rhymes as rhyme category system for Taiwanese. To achieve this, this research analyzes the rhyme behaviour of various rhyming literature and examines to what degree 22-Rhymes is applicable to it. The analysis mainly focuses on Kua-a Books, but also includes Taiwanese opera, proverbs, riddles, xiehouyu, pop songs, Modern Taiwanese poetry as well as Regulated Verse (Jintishi). The result of this research is that 22-Rhymes can cover and thus describe nearly all rhymes and rhyme behaviour with the exception of rhymes with vowels special to the Quanzhou dialect.
