The purpose of this study was to explore the status quo, difference and relationships of the university students’ adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), resilience, depressive cognitions and depression.
Five hundred and fifty-two students aged over 20 years were selected by purposive sampling from five universities in Taipei city and New Taipei city of northern Taiwan. Subjects were invited to finish the structure and self-report questionnaires, consist of the ACE International Questionnaire, the Connor Davidson Resilience Scale, the Chinese Version of the Cognitive Triad Inventory and the Chinese Version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Data were analysis by SPSS 25.0 and RStudio. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the path analysis.
Results showed that: (1) (a) the mean scores of ACEs, resilience, depressive cognitions, and depression were 0.86, 57.21, 50.87, and 17.23 respectively; (b)45.7% of the students reported at least one exposure to ACEs; 13.9% of the students had depressive symptoms. (2) the top five prevalence rates of ACEs exposure by 12 categories were as follows: emotional neglect (15.2%), parental death, separation or divorce (14.5%), domestic violence (12.1%), physical abuse (11.6%), sexual abuse (6.9%). (3) (a) the students’ father or mother whose education level was below junior high school, compare with the higher level, showed significant more ACEs; (b) the student who was in a bad family economic state before 18 years old, compare to the middle and upper level, showed significant more ACEs. (4) (a) ACEs was positively associated with depressive cognitions and depression (r = .302 and .330, respectively) and was negatively associated with resilience (r = - .208); (b) resilience was negatively associated with depressive cognitions and depression (r = - .716 and - .693, respectively); (c) depressive cognitions was positively associated with and depression (r = .730). (5) the structural model of the ACEs, resilience, depressive cognitions and depression of college students showed that: (a) the ACEs, depression cognitions, and resilience significantly affected depression. (b) the ACEs and resilience significantly affected depression cognition. (c) the ACEs significantly indirectly affected depression through depression cognition. (d) the ACEs significantly indirectly affected depression through depression cognition. (e) the relationship between ACEs and depression was partially mediated by depressive cognitions; the relationship between resilience and depression was partially mediated by depressive cognitions.
