This study tries to understand why people join Tantric Buddhism, which emerged in the 1980s as a new religious movement in Taiwan. Data were collected via interviews with 92 randomly selected believers of the group, Nona-Huatsang Tantric Buddhism. There are two main findings. (1) One third of the interviewees before converting to this group, had practiced Mahayana Buddhism; and 42% of the interviewees initially joined the group to look for ways to improve their health, love relationships, and career advancement. (2) In comparison with Mahayana Buddhism, the goal of transcending death could be achieved at the end of this life, and the practice of methods for obtaining the secular goals are aligned with the belief for transcending death.
