The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ranking of Taiwan's physical education journals. A minimum of 2 academic papers in each issue of a physical education journal has been included in the criteria for evaluation. A subjective evaluation index was conducted by questionnaire survey those who were awarded physical education research grant from the National Science Council in the last 6 years (2002-2007). Citation index was determined by calculating the number of citations in the journals. The two indices were then integrated to form the final score for cluster analysis. The results showed that a total of 25 journals meet the inclusion criteria. One hundred and forty five questionnaires were returned, a 62.77% return rate. Three categories of journals were found by the cluster analysis. Among these five journals namely, the Journal of Physical Education in Higher Education, the Physical Education Journal, the Bulletin of Sport and Exercise Psychology of Taiwan, the Chinese Journal of Physical Education, and the Journal of Taiwan Society for Sport Management were rated in the first category. There were 13 and 7 journals in the second and third categories, respectively. These results suggest that the development of local physical education journals is parallel to that of international journals. The journals with single disciplinary focus are gaining weight in academia. This trend was manifested by the emerging top ranking journals such as the Bulletin of Sport and Exercise Psychology of Taiwan and the Journal of Taiwan Society for Sport Management.
