Traditionally, teaching activities are based on the simple one-way learning between the teacher, textbook, and student. The goal of the new curriculum standards and new small class projects are to prepare students for creative thinking and information problem-solving through multiple, individual and suitable learning in this grobal information society. With more and more sources of information, students should be able to contemplate the resources abailable from the Internet, television, CD-ROM, books and newspapers. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the needs for information literacy among 5th grade students in elementary schools of Taichung area and design a new curriculum guideline of school library media program. The questionnaire of information literacy includes traditional literacy, media literacy, network literacy and computer literacy. The findings of this study are: (1)Most of the 5th grade students are urgent to have the needs of information literacy. (2)The newguideline of sequential library instruction is offered for gradesl to 6 in the following areas: acknowledgement of library and related knowledge, literature appreciation, information skills and technology media. This program would improve children's information literacy in the future.
