摘 要 本研究之主要目的在探究外語學習焦慮與動機在國中生英語學習上所扮演的角色。統計分析是在了解 (1)青少年學生是否會在學習英語的過程中感到某種程度的焦慮? (2)語言學習焦慮與動機是否和這些青少年學生的英語閱讀能力有顯著的相關? (3)語言學習焦慮與動機是否和這些青少年學生的英語字彙能力有顯著的相關? (4)學習英語的時間長短(含課外補習的時間)是否與青少年學生的語言學習焦慮及動機有顯著的相關? 研究結果發現這些國中生普遍有著一定程度的焦慮感,學習英文時間愈長的學生可能經歷的焦慮感愈低,雖然這些學生一定程度地擔心同學對他們會有負面評價或自己的能力不足,但這焦慮感尚未對他們的學習動機及語言表現造成影響。研究當中的變項唯有學習動機與學生的英語閱讀及字彙能力有著顯著的相關,青少年學生的內在學習動機與語言學習成就尤其呈現出高度的關聯性。
Abstract The primary purpose of this study is to explore the roles of anxiety and motivation in EFL Learning in the junior high school classroom. Statistical analyses were employed to determine (1) whether young EFL learners feel any anxiety in the English classroom, (2) whether both language anxiety and learning motivation are significantly related to young learners’ English reading proficiency, (3) whether both language anxiety and learning motivation are significantly related to young learners’ English vocabulary knowledge, and (4) whether years of taking English lessons, including extracurricular ones outside the regular English classroom, have any significant relation to both students’ language anxiety and motivation. The findings supported the prevalence of certain learner anxiety among the studied junior high school students. Also, students who had more English learning experience were less likely to feel anxiety in learning the foreign language. Although these young learners tended to be susceptible to apprehension over negative evaluation from their peers and to have low confidence in their own ability, learner anxiety did not seem to affect their learning motivation and language performance. Only motivation was found to be significantly correlated with both English reading proficiency and vocabulary knowledge. A high and positive correlation was found between intrinsic motivation and student language achievement among these young adolescents.
