Monk Shi Chiao Jan (釋皎然) in Tong Dynasty displeased with those contemporary poets, who were unrefined, unfair, and not polished in writing poetry, so he wrote a book called "Shih Shih" (詩式), trying to teach and enlighten people. At the same time he also claimed many theories about poetry. His book mainly dealt with the method how to create good poems, and criticized some poems written by other poets, the style of poems has also been discussed. With a noble motivate, he always emphasized the value and function of the poetry. His efforts could inspire all the readers. Actually, he had a great influence in the field of classical poetic theory and critical sphere. Earlier than Chiao Jan's Period, a great poet called Wang Chang Ling (王昌齡) wrote those books "Shih Ke"(詩格) and "Shih Zhong Mi Chih"(詩中密旨) which revised the old poetic style and tried to change some other poets' viewpoint not using the old style. They were Chen Chih Ang (陳子昂)and Lu Tsang Yung(盧藏用). Wang's theory definitely represented the poetic style from early Tong Dynasty to Mid Tong Dynasty. In fact, Wang's thought had a great influence on Chiao Jan. Chiao Jan not only succeeded Wang's theory, but also developed many new claims, such as clearly understanding, fully expression, respecting nature, and being changeable.
