魏晉南北朝時期最著名的筆記小說，即是劉義慶及其門下所合力編纂的《世說新語》，該書不但成為後人研究六朝的重要文獻，學者更可藉此得以瞭解當時文化思想情形。六朝時期不但清談之風鼎盛，僧人亦好與名士文人結交；當時僧人除鑽研佛理之外，亦對老莊玄學頗有涉獵、攝染清談氣息，並促使玄佛融攝思想成為當代主流。支遁身為當代著名僧人，不但兼通玄佛，更好與名士交遊，其人佚事於《世說新語》篇章中多有著錄，不但提供相當豐富的資料，亦多被後出書籍所採用。然而各家研究著錄，乃是各取所需，難以一窺全貌；本篇即欲藉由《世說新語》中所著錄的各項條目，對支遁之人物形象再作一整理析論。
