This study aims to analyze the formation of la-mi and ma-sa secret languages in Taiwan Southern Min (hereafter, TSM) in the framework of Optimality Theory (OT). This study first describes how both types of secret languages are created, then reviews previous rule-based research on the formation of secret languages, and last presents analytical weaknesses of prior studies. Unlike previous research which centered on segment insertion and substitution in secret language formation, this study attempts to investigate the formation of secret languages in TSM from the perspective of segment alignment and syllable well-formedness. A common set of constraints is proposed to explore the formation of the two types of secret languages in TSM. Results show that the formation of both secret languages in TSM can be well captured by ranking the same set of constraints differently. Last, it is in the hope that the proposed constraints in this study can be further modified and extended to analyze the formation of other SLs among Chinese dialects
