For contemporary Kuen Opera, Taiwan is not only one of its major markets, but where there profound and frequent interations have occurred. It is no more than ten years since the ban between Taiwan and China has been moved. During the period, amazingly, Kuen Opera has created a firm base here. The subject of this thesis is the meaning of Kuen Opera in modern Taiwan. In the first part, I argue the condition of the classic drama here today. The second part of the thesis deals with the art of the classic drama. In the beginning, I discuss the influence, which Kuen Opera has made in various areas in Taiwan. Then, I focus on the art itself to figure out the interactions between this ancient drama and modern theatre by analyzing the performed pieces of drama. In the conclusion, I emphasize the importance of new creative works through the modern spirits, which have been observed in Kuen Opera.
