The Zhong-Gang Canal in Xinzhuang Dist, New Taipei City, is an important public construction of the north Xinzhuang district. Zhong-Gang Canal drew water from Dahan River in agricultural period and ran cross the old district to the present Sub-urban center district. It was the water canal for the agriculture in many years ago, but turn into the canal of waste water when the urban sprawl to Xinzhuang Dist. It's not only the sign of Xinzhuang's landscape change, but also the collective memory of local residents. After the improvement of Zhong-Gang Canal's environment, the green corridor space has become an important place where the residents who live in old & new communities to communicate with each other. And the installing fee promotes not only amount and quality of the art works, but also increases the art atmosphere of the local area. This research is working on the citizen cognition and preferences of Zhong-Gang Canal’s public art, intends to understand the real interaction of residents from the initial planning period, citizen participate in installing public art process, to maintenance period. This research adapts the research methods of "semi-structured interview"&"nonparticipant observation" to propose the hypothesis and use "questionnaire" to conduct a survey of the Zhong-Gang Canal user's public art cognition and preferences. This research finds out the existed three permanent art works have the obvious differences in citizen cognition and preferences. The place where installs public art, the scale of art works and the eye-catching present ways are the key points in installing public art. At the same time, this research’s result find out the citizen participation degree is obviously low. This result shows people pay little attention on public art, so they can't understand the significance of art works. It means the interaction of the installing process and the design concept are the key factors to decide the success of a public art. Finally, we find out the strong relationship between cognition and preferences from the result of the survey. It means the fabulous public art is not only have to satisfy the requirement by law, but also have to improve citizen to understand the art works and get more preferences & identity.
