莊子所謂的「天地有大美而不言」境界，是蔣勳美學思想的中心主軸。「美無所不在」、「每一個人按照自己想要的樣子完成自己，那就是美。」蔣勳的美，是回歸到最深處的自我存在。對於創作設計者而言，是一項很重要心靈活動。而美到底是什麼呢？蔣勳說：「美是一種判斷，美是研究我們生命裡面所有複雜感覺的一個學科。」所以，美和生命互為影響，藝術文學的記憶和生活文化的記憶是交融在一起。美，是與感官有所關連的。美，都是在使用我們的感官；人類有著觸覺、味覺、聽覺、視覺和嗅覺五種感覺，每種感覺所呈現的人的價值判斷。蔣勳提倡的「空白」美學意涵，是回來做獨特的自己。「空白」的另一哲學內涵，即是反感官的一種表現，也就是蔣勳欲找回五官原本的感動。通過「空白」，藝術才更有創造力。空白，才能去感受生命的原貌；空白，是感受美一個很重要的開始。
