本研究目的在了解國民中學輔導人員在工作上所感受壓力程度，其身心所受的影響及適應方式。分析台灣地區495國中輔導人員於「國民中學輔導人員工作狀況調查表」上所作反應，結果發現：(1) 國中輔導人員在工作上普遍感受相當沉重的壓力，尤以工作負荷、經費設備、督導評鑑、同事關係等方面較明顯，但其程度又因性別、教育之背景、年資、職務、服務地區及學校規模之不同而有異；(2) 因工作壓力而造成對身心的影響並不顯著，較嚴重者為身心疲憊、挫折感、健忘等情緒症狀；其中又以女性及規模較大學校的輔導人員為多；(3) 國中輔導人員面對工作壓力情境，較多採取解決問題式的適應措施，唯其效果並不明顯。研究者根據各項研究發現，分別就建立整體性支持系統與未來研究兩方面，提出具體建議事項。
495 junior high school counselors were investigated on their perceptions of work stress, its effects and the coping strategies used in the work settings. Results of the study showed that: (1) Counselors perceived a great deal of stress. Sources of stress included job overload, insufficient financial support, and repeated supervision. (2) Counselors' perceptions differed as far as their sex, educational background, duty, years of experiences, and school scale and location are concerned. (3) Effects of work stress on counselors' physical/ psychological states were mild. Female counselors and those from country schools perceived severer influence than their counterparts. (4) Various coping skills were adopted but failed to produce effective results. Based on results found in the study, the researcher suggested an organized support system be set up to encourage counselors' commitment to the profession.
