容受力係一源自生態系統管理觀念，近年來，在西方國家被廣泛地應用作爲都市成長管理之規劃工具，以資源之供給面爲導向，探討在規定之環境品質標凖、資源之供給量、公共設施容量、土地資原可利用性等限制條件下所能承受之都成長，回顧歷年來被採用於土地使用規劃或都市成長管理之容受力，主要可分爲環境的、知覺的、體制及設施的，以及經濟的等四大類。在方法上，可被用來探討一地區都市成長或上地開發之容受力，主要有生態規劃方法、簡易估算法、數學規劃怯、生態系統模型等。因此，容受力觀念之應用於都市成長管理，所涵蓋之層面非常廣泛。
Carrying Capacity was originally associated with ecosystems management. In land use planning and growth management, the concept is used recently in foreign country. Carrying Capacity is viewed from the standpoint of resource supply oriented and discussed under the limited conditions of environmental quality standards, resource supply quantity public utility capacity and land resource availability the bearing degree of unban growth Generally speaking, planning studies that use the concept of carrying capacity fall into four categories environmental, perceptual, institutional/service, and economic The major methods of carrying capacity analysis are ecological planning, simple measurement, mathematical programming and ecosystem model In order to understand the operational feasibility and limits the author and his aduisor have conducted a case study of Taipei Metropolitan Region to develop an unban-Environmental system model of simulating the dynamic interactions between urban growth and environmental resources.
