In his paper "The Disputed Recognition of Chinese Philosophies",Zhao Tingyang launches a critique of Western philosophical research in China insofar as it "re-narrates"more than it "develops new significance",which is no doubt the case. However,by taking historical factors such as the introduction of Western philosophy into consideration, and especially by applying Zhao Tingyang’s conception of "contemporariness",this paper argues that in the current situation, the "scholarship"aspect of Western philosophical research is not only inevitable but also significant to contemporary Chinese philosophies. In certain aspects of translating philosophical works into Chinese, carrying out fundamental research, and making corrections and revisions, there is lots of work to do. Only when we can have a better understanding of Western philosophy can"developing new significance"and furthermore "creating a new concept of philosophy"be possible. This paper also discusses the concept of the history of philosophy as well as opportunities for philosophy in the future.
