After a three-stage reform since 1996, the general education of National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) has reached a sound infrastructural establishment in several aspects, including the concepts and objectives, the organization and institution, the teaching and administration resources, the curriculum design, etc. during the development process, the program has encountered three evaluations held by ministry of Education (MOE), including the 1998 National Survey on General Education of Universities and Colleges, 2004 Evaluation on general Education Program of Seven Research-Oriented Universities, and 2005 General Evaluations of Universities and Colleges, respectively. The results of these evaluations not only indicated that NSYSU general education program has continued improvements, but also gave many constructive comments, particularly on teaching quality. The purpose of this article is to address the action taken and the amendment made after the evaluations. The new curriculum based upon a set of fundamental core and in-depth extended content courses is developed and implemented, starting Fall, 2006. A comparison is made between the old and new curricula. It is hoped that after this reform, the NSYSU general education program may advance towards a new era during its development.
