高羅佩的漢學著作，都是五十年多前出版的「舊書」，如今翻開，字裡行間，竟然流露出大量要等到上世紀的後半葉才在西方學術界真正走紅的「物質文化」(material culture)與「新史學」(New History)的色彩，真是一種在歷史研究中所謂的「時代超前」的現象(anachronism) 。雖然高羅佩從未標榜他的研究屬於「物質文化」與「新史學」，甚至也有可能完全沒有聽說過這些新的術語。與之對映，他又有小部分著作，涉及「新史學」中的「動物文化史」(Cultural History of Animals)之領域。高羅佩著作中「物質文化」部分，涉及到各種著作，筆者另將有專文，以〈高羅佩與物質文化—— 從「新文化史」的視野之比較研究〉為題，展開全面性討論。做為姊妹篇，本文則以《馬頭明王古今諸說源流考》與《長臂猿考》二書，集中討論高羅佩漢學與「動物文化史」的關係。簡言之，筆者在「新史學」的大背景下，試圖對高羅佩有關各書與各次領域，進行初步的討論，所撰的上述二文，各有其分工。同時，此二文又有互補性—— 由於高羅佩筆下的「動物文化史」往往無可避免要聯繫到「物質文化」，而這二者都可以視為是「新史學」的分支—— 因而本文討論中亦經常互涉兩個方面。
