The purpose of this study was to investigate freshmen's satisfaction and perceptions toward English ability grouping instruction. From one technological university in southern Taiwan in the 2008-2009 academic year, 274 freshmen were selected from each of A, B, C levels of three colleges (Business; Informatics; and Mach-electro). A 14-item questionnaire survey was conducted two weeks before the end of 2008 academic year. Data was collected and analyzed by SPSS/PC 12.0 for Windows. The results showed that majority of students expressed positive responses and perceptions toward the freshman English ability grouping instruction. Qualitative data collected from students' written expressions on the questionnaire were used to depict the difficulties they encountered; qualitative data from the minute of English teachers' Forum would provide possible solutions to these difficulties. The researchers suggested that freshman English ability grouping instruction program should be continued with a little improvement in terms of placement techniques. It is also suggested that the administrators and teachers should formulate reassessment rules, grading system for every class level, replacement procedures, and time duration to carry out the more effective English instruction.
