The Japanese occupation of Taiwan (1895-1945) has had some degree of influence on Taiwan’s historical and cultural development from the artistic perspective. It also had various levels of impact on pop culture and life. Many people believe that Taiwan's calligraphy inheritance was strictly from the Chinese, but In fact the development of calligraphy in Japan, once promoted in Taiwan, was also a major influence on the Taiwanese learning system and display style. In July 2009 in "The Fifth Research Presentations," held by Association of Calligraphy Studies, I presented a study entitled "The Activities and Influences of Japanese Calligraphers During the Period of Japanese Rule of Taiwan Using Meikaku Kusakabe as an Example." The publication focused on a Taiwanese representative of modern calligraphy, Chen, Dingqi (1911-1994), and his accomplishments and works of calligraphy. The Japanese Association of Calligraphy Studies’ main focus is on the history of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. They had not given notice to Taiwan’s calligraphy development. In The Fifth Research Presentation, scholars discussed the calligraphy by Chen, Dingqi, and have shown a deep interest in his achievements and calligraphy. I think this is a great opportunity to let Japanese know about Taiwanese Calligraphy. Although there are many relevant studies and published works on Chen, Dingqi, studies on the relation between his work and Japanese calligraphy is relatively rare. Calligraphy changed greatly around Meiji to Showa in Japan. In 1880 (Meiji 13) Yang Shoujing visited Japan. He brought with him a lot of ancient Chinese rubbings, not just calligraphy rubbings, but research and some books of calligraphy. He held exhibitions and made magazines, and held competitive calligraphy competitions. Before him no one had ever created a learning environment of calligraphy like this. This was an important period of development for modern Japanese calligraphic style. Chen, Dingqi was born during the Japanese occupation and with that came a diverse learning of the elements of Japanese culture. I think his style with his background and the Japanese colonial rule has important connotations. In this paper the specific works of literature to be examined are the Japanese calligraphy and calligraphy works of Chen, Dingqi. Through this article, I hope to provide a clear presentation on his works with historical values.
