This study on the visual style of cigarette packaging from Japanese colonial period (1895-2010) was divided into three periods: colonial monopoly period (1895-1945), public sales after retrocession period (1945-2002), and enterprising evolution period (2002-2010).By using literature analysis and collecting samples of cigarette packing from the image of the cigarette package, we resolve the relationship between the social environment and the cigarette packaging and established the development of cigarette from its historical contexts and recorded the cultural development of the cigarette industry in Taiwan.The tobacco market had entered a situation which needs creation of tobacco control legislation analysis to increase the profits of selling cigarettes in Taiwan. The higher of the pricing of the tobacco made the lower of the range designing cigarette package. The era of contending became obvious since the period of Japanese colonial monopoly from the relationship between cigarette packaging design and the development of historical transition. It also highlighting a few features: 1. The designing of cigarette case presents the integration of the diverse ethnic groups and diverse cultural values. 2. The designing of cigarette case presents the social situation. 3. Cigarette cases become the best commercial purposes for government to deliver policies about tobacco regulation. 4. It gets the view of the changing economic and industrial structure from the cigarette packaging in Taiwan. Several changes of cigarette packing design can be seen based on these features: 1. The visual design is getting simple from complex contents, the layout elements is getting more from less and the printing is getting delicate from rough. 2. The soft cases of cigarette is replaced by hard cases. 3. The designing is becoming international and the naming is from Chinese context to English context.
