Sequencing is an ordering device. It entails relating successive spaces harmoniously so that each space becomes meaningful as a link in a chain, beyond its own architectural significance. Using historic examples from China and Italy, this essay delves into the past and explores the validity and efficancy of sequencing as an important tool in the making and shaping of environments-of gardens, buildings, and urban spaces.
