　　　　　本文旨在探討自由社會的公民教育。公民教育是一種政治社會化的過程，因此必須對這個政治社會所企圖維繫的基本特徵與精神有所瞭解，並傳遞給下一代。民主社會的基礎在於自由主義的精神。自由主義視個人為有目的的存在，個人有能力為自己決定幸福之所在。因此，自由主義除了必須解決對政府的權力作道德上的限制之外，還面對多元價值的事實。自由主義的中立原則就是解決這兩個問題的答案。任何一派的政治理論所著眼的必然是政治社群的成員與國家的關係，這指的也就是公民資格的觀念。坎諾瓦將公民資格區分為法律的、心理的以及行為的三方面。本研究將以此依據藉以分析自由主義的公民資格觀：分別 以羅爾斯的理論以及自由主義的公民德行說明心理以及行為要素。民主的存續有賴於我們將自由平等的理念傳遞給新的世代， 這些價值既非啟示的真理 (revealed truth)，也非自然 習慣，更沒有證據顯示人類天生就擁有這些價值。致力於人類尊嚴、自由平等權利、社會與經濟正義、法治、禮貌、容忍與差異、個人與公民責任、自制與自尊，所有這些都是必須經過教導與學習的。因此，自由社會的活力必須依賴該政治社會有效處理公民教育的能力。
