This action research study investigated the effect of applying Teaching games for understanding (TGfU) instruction to tennis courses for university students. The teaching model of TGfU instruction encompasses a range of tactics and strategies for teaching games and competitions, as well as developing sports skills. The teaching process for university tennis course consists of six stage. These stages include games, game appreciation, tactical awareness, making appropriate decision, skill execution, and performance. The participants consisted of 44 university students. The study was implemented for 12 weeks. The data were collected through classroom dialogue records, teacher’s teaching reflection notes, classroom observation, co-researcher classroom observation, feedback, interviews, tennis cognition tests, questionnaires, and Game Perfoemance Assessment Instrument. The results of this study are as follows: (1) applying TGfU instruction to tennis courses is appropriate for university students. (2) applying TGfU instruction to tennis courses for university students can improve students’ cognition and learning outcomes. (3) applying TGfU instruction to tennis courses for university students can improve learning engagement. Based on the results, this study proposed some suggestions and recommendations for teachers and future researchers. Suggestions for teachers include: design game content and formulate competition rules according to students' levels; use heterogeneous group exercises, create a positive learning atmosphere and choose appropriate teaching venues. Suggestions for future research include: applying understanding teaching in college physical education teaching; exploring the impact of understanding teaching on physical education teaching; and continuing to track the impact of understanding teaching.
