The standard of values is the accepting or rejecting of life and death. In terms of the outlooks on life and death, Chuang Tzi persists in believing that three different manifestations-enjoying life, enjoying death, and equating living with death-exist simultaneously. Chuang Tzi's particular way of speech contributes to t hese three different outlooks. As a manifestation of “Yan,” the three different outlooks on life and death depend on “Yi”, which delivers the comprehension of “Dao.” The “Yan” roughly expresses Chuang Tzi's understanding of “Dao.” Firstly, the “Yan” showing the stand of enjoying life implies that “Dao”, as a state of life, can provide us with a proper way of living. Secondly, the “Yan” showing the stand of enjoying death implies the ways of stepping into this state of life and attains a proper way of living. Thirdly, the “Yan” showing the stand of equating life with death implies the manifestations of the world in the state of “Dao.”
