This paper discusses documents dealing with Yushan 玉山 written during the Ch’ ing dynasty to explore how people during that time thought of the mountain. In particular, we look at works by Chai Hao 翟灝, written in 1805, and Ko Peyuan 柯培元, penned in 1835, that express an understanding of the mountain quite different from other writers of the Ch’ing dynasty. Topics examined in this paper include the environmental imagination, the conservation of the ecosystem, and the life sphere.
