臺灣地區老年人口數逐年上升,與老年人有關的問題愈來愈多,也愈受到重視。在生理方面,足夠的肌肉質量與維持適當肌力,對於老年人獨立自主地完成日常活動扮演著重要角色。然而,若此時出現骨骼肌減少症,將對老年人的肌肉適能產生負面的影響。有計畫地以阻力訓練介入,除了增加肌肉質量與改善負面的肌肉適能,也將增加能量消耗,抑制身體脂肪堆積。這些改善對於維持老年人的健康與生活品質都有正面助益。
