「教科書」在中小學階段扮演著提供學習內容、思考方向和教學方式等資訊的重要角色（陳麗華，2008；Nicol & Crespo, 2006），許多研究也指出，教科書的使用與內容的編排，影響教師的教學甚鉅（Ball & Cohen, 1996; Kauffman, Johnson, Kardos, Liu, & Peske, 2002; Remillard, 1999; Remillard & Bryans, 2004; Sawada et al., 2002），亦將直接影響學生的學習（Briars, 2001; Griffin, Evans, Timms, & Trowell, 2000; Huntley, Rasmussen, Villarubi, Sangtong, & Fey, 2000; Mullis et al., 2000; Reys, Reys, Lapan, Holliday, & Wasman, 2003; Riordan & Noyce, 2001; Tarr et al., 2008）。
