This review examines Sabine Fruhstuck’s book, which ismainly based on her personal experiences of in Japan Self-DefenseForce (SDF)base, and makes positive remarks on Fruhstuck’sdiscussions of the SDF's role in Japanese society, including howwomen were accepted by SDF, how Japanese society saw womenself-defense forces, and how Japanese officials positively shapedthe collective memory of SDF. Fruhstuck’s study sets aninnovative model of the socio-cultural research on SDF andfeminism.
