Emerging with their diverse categories and price advantage, micro application programs bring the market a totally different business model. The key to success thus lies in powerful advertisement and promotions through unique and exquisite icon design. In this study, Multidimensional Scaling, Questionnaire Survey, and Interview were used to conduct a clustering investigation of icon design styles based on 100 representative icon design samples of digital application systems. The analysis was aimed to understand the relationship between the design style cognition and design elements of the icons of digital application systems and to generalize typical icon design styles and features of digital application systems through clustering analysis in hopes of generating maximum efficiency in the icon design of digital application systems in terms of creative expression and visual communication. In total, 5 visual styles of icon design were categorized according to the first-stage research result, and based on the common features, each style was named. The styles were respectively Feature Enhancement, Vector Symbol, Function Display, Lettering Layout, and Topic Presentation. However, the characteristics that each style showed varied according to the style cognitive categories, by which the multiple aspects of the icon design styles of digital application systems were displayed. The second-stage research concluded that the basis for the participants to perceive the icon design styles of digital application systems included five major design style cognitive elements, respectively Production Theme, Expression Technique, Color Configuration, Layout, and Appearance. It was found from the participant clustering method and the interview process that Expression Technique and Production Theme most easily influenced the icon design style clustering of digital application systems. Based on the two aforementioned cognitive elements, most of the participants differentiated the design styles. The following elements were Layout, Color Configuration, and Appearance.
