2016年 7月下旬，澳洲廣播公司揭露北領地青少年矯正居留中心官方虐待青少年事件，由於數位澳洲原住民青少年是此事件受害者，澳洲相關的原住民法律扶助組織呼籲當局正視長期以來在法律權利上處於弱勢的原住民。北領地青少年監獄事件，凸顯了澳洲雖然是個進步且多元的國家，澳洲政策上也積極保護弱勢的原住民，但原住民在白人主導的澳洲社會依然是極度的弱勢。自從 1938年原住民權利運動以來，一直到工黨政府總理陸克文在 2008年代表澳洲政府正式向原住民道歉為止；這段歷程中，澳洲原住民向政府透過不同形式與抗爭極力爭取原住民法律上的權利、原住民身份的認定、教育權，以及原住民土地權等等。同時，澳洲政府也透過不同的形式來促進澳洲的多元文化發展，特別在原住民與教育議題上。繼陸克文在 2008年的道歉後， 2010年 11月，工黨政府總理 Julia Gillard也宣布在三年內舉行修憲全國公投，決定是否承認澳洲原住民的憲法地位。2016年 2月，保守的執政聯盟政府總理 Malcolm Turnbull表示，原住民憲法地位公投可能在 2017年舉行。簡言之，澳洲雖然是標榜 Fair Go（公平對待）與多元的民主國家，但原住民權益的保護議題上，在澳洲社會依舊是一個爭議的焦點。

In July 2016, the Australian Broadcasting Cooperation revealed an investigation into the alleged mistreatment of children, including some aborigines, at Darwin’s Don Dale youth detention center which shocked Australian society. Although Australia is a multicultural country, this case still shows Indigenous Australians are disadvantaged in Australia. From the various protection acts of the early 1900s and assimilation policies to the 1938 Aboriginal rights movement in Sydney, through Mabo v Queensland and to the Recognition Act, Australia’s aboriginal people have kept striving for civil, identity and land rights (Native Title). The Australian government has made motions to improve Indigenous’ education and civil rights to help Indigenous’ development. However, despite the Australian government’s professions of a “Fair Go” for everyone, the rights of Indigenous Australians are still a crucial and controversial issue in Australia.
