The present paper makes a reexamination of the relationship between Jin Sheng-tan's revision of the Hsi-hsiang chi and the revisions by Zhang Shen-zhi and Wang Ji-de based on comparison of verse commentary. Of the five known extant copies of Jin Sheng-tan's revision of the Hsi-hsiang chi, the author has found that the first three are based on the revision by Zhang Shen-zhi, the fourth may be based on that of either Zhang Shen-zhi or Wang Ji-de, and the fifth is most likely based on that of Wang Ji- de. Upon closer examination of Wang Ji-de's revision, the author makes the surprising discovery that Jin@s use of "segmentation" (分節 ) in critiquing the Hsi-hsiang chi is based closely on the technique used by Wang. Furthermore, his use of the concepts of "density" (密 ) and "re-striction" (拘 ) also originates with Wang. In light of these discoveries,it will be necessary to reassess many of the studies done on Jin Sheng-tan's Hsi-hsiang chi commentaries over the past several hundred years.
