《寡婦蘭特氏》是英國歷史上第一位職業女作家貝恩在性政治隱喻層面帶有總結性質的作品,不啻為英國早期現代權力話語協商的代表文本,亦足以反映女性在17世紀末期爭奪公共空間的復雜性與策略性。該劇在兩個層面上展開了戲劇沖突,一是劇中男女的愛情婚姻協商,二是弗吉尼亞政體矛盾引發的沖突,這兩個層面的敘事交織成一個整體,共同組成了復雜的性政治隱喻體系。貝恩在《寡婦蘭特氏》中為女性在戲劇領域的思想建構及思想傳播模式樹立了典范,也顯示出復辟時期戲劇中性與政治這兩種權力關系之間的流動性與對應關系。
