The study of original characters of dialects presupposes systematic correspondences between linguistic structures as its basis, and, as a sub-field of historical linguistics, accepts internal reconstruction as well as comparative method as its methodology. In this article, the author proposes three approaches in searching for and identifying plausible original characters. The three approaches are character-searching, sound-searching, and meaning-searching. Using data from the Southern Min dialect, the author gives a detailed argument for the validity of these approaches.
