The most significant newspaper enterprise was spread into late Ch'ing Dynasty from the West. Of all China's developing news circles, Shanghai Shun Pao (1842-1949) had the longest History and the most volume of circulation. Due to Shum Pao's impact on society and the merit of easy to look up (have full copy and process plate), it had became the most popular materials used by the modern history research workers. However, most research workers use Shum Pao's catalogue without knowing the newspaper office's history; even if some people knew a little of its history, their impression was only stayed with it is the newspaper that ran by the local people, and not to mention to realize that Shum Pao had been expropriate and reorganize by the Kuomintang before it cease publication. The turning point of Shum Pao from local newspaper to the faction newspaper was took place in the Sino-Japanese War. The Kuomintang's army soon retreated from Shanghai after the war broke out. The press had also faced the dilemma of whether stayed in Shanghai or retreated with the government. Shum Pao also once refused being examined initially, which made them move to Hankow and Hong Kong for further development. Before long, Shum Pao wanted to return to the isolated Shanghai because of its business market. Not until Shum Pao being caught by fake Japanese authority, Shum Pao becomes the enemy state's newspaper during the explosion of Pacific War. However, Shum Pao was taken over by Kuomintang after the victory of Sino-Japanese War eventually. Did Shum Pao become the enemy state's newspaper voluntarily? How did Shum Pao develop during the long eight years in Sino-Japanese War? How about were the relationships among Shum Pao with British American Concession authorities, Japanese military authority, Wang Ching-wei government, Chinese communist party, and Chungking national government? How did the stress of the current events, the transition of the personnel matters, and the operation of the newspaper office affect Shum Pao's comments? These are the problems that will be discussed in this project. There is Shum Pao's newspaper office archives kept in Shanghai Archives. I plan to check them, and try to make the cross analysis in order to reveal an aspect of semi-occupied Shanghai.
