Lesbian Identity Formation
and Stigma Management
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to explore the experiences and identity formation process of lesbians , as well as their strategies of stigma management. After interviewing five self-identified lesbians, the results were presented case by case, and then with cross-case format to integrate the similarities and differences of their identity formation process and the strategies of stigma management.
The major findings were summarized as following:
1.The participants experienced various content and dimensions of sexual identities, including identifying oneself as lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Some may also indicate that they refused to give one label and recognized that the sexual identity may change from time to time, depending on the situations.
2.For most participants, sexual identity was a conscious decision, which may not be necessary consistent with their sexual orientation. They also reported that sexual identity can be fluid. However, one participant insisted that sexual identity and sexual orientation were not by choice and could not be changed.
3.In contrary to homosexuality identity development models, the results indicated non-liner experiences. The formation of sexual identity was deeply influenced by individual characteristics and life experiences. The formation of sexual identity can be seen as a construction process between individual characteristics and social context the individual lived by.
4.Regarding stigma management, the major strategies were covering and coming out to certain limited people. To come out to the family was the most difficult issue, but at the same time, the participants expected to have family support and acceptance.
Lesbian and gay researches have not been gaining enough attention in the field of counseling and psychotherapy. The results of this research explore the multi-faces of lesbian experiences. Counselors and counseling educators should be aware of new development and research in the area of sexual orientation. The contributions of the results were discussed and future researches were also suggested.
