There are four purposes of this research. First, this research was to explore the gendered power consciousness of sexuality counselors. Second, this research was to explore the influential factors of the gendered power consciousness of sexuality counselors. Third, this research was to explore the clinical experiences of sexuality counselors after sexuality counseling training on gendered power perspective. Fourth, this research was to construct the core values and teaching praxis strategies of sexuality counseling training courses from the process of sexuality counseling training on gendered power perspective.
This research was based on gendered power discourses of feminism and feminism methodology. Five sexuality counselors were recruited for this study, who had sexuality counselors certificated or were sexuality counseling trained before. All of them had clinical experiences of sexuality counseling. All the participants attended to a three-day sexuality counseling training on gendered power perspective workshop which was offered by the researcher. Semi-structured interviews for each participant were conducted by researcher before and after sexuality counseling training on gendered power perspective for data collection.
The research findings were presented by the following sub-sections:
Gendered power consciousness of sexuality counselors blend patriarchy and gender equity conceptions, included:gendered power consciousness with patriarchy perspective, sexuality terms with contextual and gendered meanings, and gendered power affecting the process of sexuality counseling through biological sex and sexual orientation.
The influential factors of gendered power consciousness included:original family and life experiences, marriage experiences and the courses and training of sex and gender issues.
The clinical experiences of sexuality counselors trained by sexuality counseling training on gendered power perspective included:the growth of gendered power consciousness, praxis of gendered power consciousness with multiple strategies and the dilemmas of praxis of gendered power consciousness.
The core values of sexuality counseling training courses on gendered power perspective included:consciousness raising, consciousness deepening, practice and praxis, and the integration of individual and profession. Teaching praxis based on positionality and authority included:continuing reflection of instructor on positionality, student-centered teaching, promoting students’ gendered power sensitive ability from practical operation and the caring of teacher-student relationship.
In terms of the results of the research, the clinical experiences and feedback of sexuality counselors for the training courses on gendered power perspective, self-reflection on teaching praxis, the construction and design of future sexuality counseling training courses on gendered power perspective, and the reflections of researcher were discussed.
Finally, the implications of the research for future study, sexuality counselling practice and training of sexuality counselling were offered.
