The present paper explores the relationship between the Book of Changes and Pre-qin Confucianism using related passages from the bamboo slips discovered at Jingmen, Hubei Province in 1994. On the basis of these materials, the author reaffirms the validity of descriptions of the relationship between Confucius and the Book of Changes in traditional Chinese documents and such archeological finds as the Mawangdui silk books. Pre-Qin Confucians not only held the Book of Changes to be a classic, but also pursued in-depth study of its meaning. By the mid-to late warring States Period (475-221 B. C.),the Confucians had already elevated the Book of Changes to its position as one of the five classics. The author concludes by asserting that some of the modern popular views regarding the relationship between Pre-Qin Confucians and the Book of Changes do not hold water.
